Clear the Air: A Fresh Start for Your Home This Great American Smokeout!
What if one day could spark a healthier routine for your entire household? The Great American Smokeout, observed each year on the third Thursday of November, is known as a time to quit smoking or vaping. It can also be a powerful invitation to reset the places where everyday life happens—starting at home.
This November, go beyond a one-day pledge. Invite everyone in your household to take part in a Clear the Air Challenge: Choose one meaningful change that makes your living space healthier by quitting smoking and vaping
Why Start at Home?
Home is where routines take shape—and where a healthier choice can benefit everyone. Smoke and vape aerosol do not simply disappear when the air looks clear; residue can remain on walls, carpets, furniture, and ventilation systems, while drifting air can reach other rooms or nearby units.
A clear no smoking or vaping household rule also does more than protect children, elders, guests, and pets. It creates a supportive environment for anyone trying to quit by moving smoking and vaping cues out of the spaces connected with meals, relaxation, and time together.
Take the Clear the Air Challenge
- Make the Pledge Together: Agree that smoking and vaping will happen only outdoors and away from doors, windows, and air intakes. Write down the household rule and place it somewhere visible so residents and guests know what to expect.
- Reset the Space: Remove ashtrays, lighters, vaping devices, and other cues from shared indoor areas. If someone is quitting, ask what kind of support feels helpful—whether that is a check-in, a walk, or simply keeping temptation out of sight.
- Start a Conversation Where You Live: In apartments and condos, smoke and vape aerosol can move between units through shared walls, hallways, and ventilation systems. Ask your property manager about current policies, share available resources, or look for certified smoke and vape-free housing options in New Mexico HERE
